How to asses true transformer condition through online DGA?

Webinar
IIoT & Maintenance 4.0 & 5.0

Learn how to use DGA and condition monitoring to detect developing faults and support better transformer maintenance decisions

As industrial electrification increases, transformers become even more critical to the continuity and reliability of your operations. At the same time, ageing transformer populations, developing degradation mechanisms and long replacement lead times make it increasingly important to understand the actual condition of these assets.

As an electrical, maintenance or reliability professional, understanding the importance of a transformer to an installation is essential, but determining what is happening inside it presents a different challenge. Developing faults are not always immediately visible, while an unexpected transformer failure can have significant operational and safety consequences. The challenge is therefore not simply to maintain a transformer, but to obtain reliable condition information that helps you identify degradation before it develops into a serious problem.

Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) and transformer condition monitoring can provide valuable information about developing faults and degradation mechanisms. But obtaining measurements is only part of the task: you also need to understand how monitoring results should be interpreted and how they contribute to an integrated assessment of transformer condition.

During this webinar, you explore the role of DGA and condition monitoring in assessing transformer health. Starting from practical transformer management challenges, the session explains the diagnostic concepts needed to better understand developing faults and monitoring results. This helps you use condition information more effectively when evaluating maintenance needs and supporting maintenance and replacement decisions.

Content of the webinar

Transformer condition as a maintenance and reliability challenge

  • Ageing transformer populations
  • Uncertainty about the actual condition of transformers
  • Consequences of unexpected transformer failures
  • Safety and operational risks
  • Long replacement lead times and the impact of increasing electrification

Transformer degradation and failure mechanisms

  • How transformer condition can deteriorate over time
  • Recognising developing faults before they lead to failure
  • Understanding the relationship between degradation and diagnostic information

Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)

  • The role of DGA in transformer condition assessment
  • Using DGA to identify indications of developing faults
  • Understanding the diagnostic concepts required to interpret DGA information

From measurements to meaningful condition information

  • Interpreting monitoring results
  • Relating monitoring information to possible degradation mechanisms
  • Avoiding a purely measurement-driven approach to transformer diagnostics

Integrated transformer condition assessment

  • Combining diagnostic and monitoring information
  • Building a more complete picture of transformer condition
  • Using condition information to support maintenance and replacement decisions

You learn how DGA and transformer condition monitoring contribute to a better understanding of developing transformer problems, and how diagnostic information can support a more integrated assessment of transformer health. The webinar is intended for professionals who already understand the basic functioning and role of transformers but want to deepen their knowledge of transformer diagnostics.
