Maintenance Management

Maintaining our capital assets has become increasingly important. Estimates of the cost of maintenance fluctuate somewhere between 10 and 15% of our national income. The temptation to postpone maintenance due to lack of money or short term profit goals is always present, but in the long run this always leads to problems. Maintenance is carried out on a wide variety of objects (also called 'assets').

Objects can malfunction and break down. The chapter 'Objects and malfunctions' elaborates on malfunction probabilities and malfunction behaviour. Special attention is paid to the description of the maintenance process and its control in the form of a model. The complex aircraft maintenance process is used as a reference because most maintenance processes can be derived from this. The establishment of the 'maintenance concept' is described in detail because it deals with the amount of maintenance 'required and sufficient'. Concepts such as malfunction-related maintenance and activity-related maintenance are described in detail. Maintenance functions and maintenance organisation are then explained. It also addresses a number of methodologies and the computerisation of maintenance.
