The economic crisis of recent years has made it painfully clear to us that a healthy economy cannot flourish on the basis of service companies alone. For decades, our industrial activities have been subject to outsourcing and offshoring as a result of, among other things, our wage costs and energy prices.
The realisation that it is high time to reverse this trend has only recently dawned on governments at all levels. After all, a strong manufacturing industry acts as a catalyst for derived services and jobs.
Industrial Renaissance
Terms such as reindustrialisation and industrial renaissance crop up in policy statements with ambitious objectives. They are often viewed with suspicion on the other side of the Atlantic. In the United States, this re-shoring is a fact, partly due to the lower energy prices resulting from the exploitation of its own shale gas reserves. Regional, national and European governments are currently considering measures to revive investment in industrial activity.
As a trade association for companies and professionals active in technical maintenance and asset management, BEMAS has for years been an important bridge between the various stakeholders in this field. By raising the level of maintenance and asset management in our companies, BEMAS contributes to keeping our industry competitive.
The vision of key stakeholders
The phenomenon of the industrial renaissance can be approached in different ways. Industry, government and academia each have their own vision and ideas about the current situation and how to get out of it. In order to collect these points of view, BEMAS conducted interviews with key stakeholders from these domains. We have collected them in our book Industrial Renaissance in North-West Europe: The key role of Maintenance and Asset Management.
