Introduction to Vibration Analysis and Vibration Sensors: Benefits, Limitations, and Key Applications

Training
Maintenance Management
Reliability Engineering

A one-day training course covering the fundamentals of vibration analysis and the practical use of vibration sensors in predictive maintenance.

How can you ensure effective use of vibration sensors and equipment within your Predictive Maintenance (PdM) programs? Which type of sensor is best suited to your application? How do you distinguish valuable data from noise? And how do you manage the limitations of the technology to obtain reliable results?

This one-day training course answers these key questions. In the morning, you’ll build a solid foundation by learning the basic principles of vibration analysis. In the afternoon, we dive into the different types of vibration sensors and devices (offline/online, wireless, etc.), exploring how to maximize their benefits while understanding the practical limitations you may face.

Programme

Morning: Vibration Technology – Fundamentals of Vibration Analysis

  • Introduction to vibration analysis:
    • Key concepts: time signal, FFT spectrum, etc.
    • Practical vibration analysis for diagnosing issues such as:
      • Resonance
      • Misalignment
      • Rolling element bearing defects
      • Unbalance detection
  • From general vibration monitoring to spectral and waveform analysis

Afternoon: Vibration Sensors & Devices – Benefits and Limitations

  • Overview of various vibration sensor technologies
  • Selecting the right sensor technology for your application
  • Influencing factors: sensitivity, frequency range, environmental conditions
  • From basic to advanced accelerometers:
    • Piezoelectric vs MEMS
    • Loop-powered and signal-conditioned sensors
  • From offline to online monitoring systems:
    • Handheld meters
    • Data collectors/analyzers
    • Semi-online systems
    • Online condition monitoring systems
  • Protection vs. prediction-oriented devices
  • Wired vs. wireless solutions
  • From edge to cloud computing:
    • What is Edge/Cloud computing?
    • Local vs. cloud-based data hosting (data protection & ownership)
    • Communication protocols
  • From contact sensors to non-contact vibration cameras
  • Demonstration of selected devices and technologies
