Failure analysis for Technicians

Training
Reliability Engineering

Technicians are trained and usually have the experience to solve breakdowns quickly and effectively. They are good at that and widely appreciated for it. Although less visible and therefore less "sexy", it would be nice if those same technicians could ensure that breakdowns do not recur. This requires more than just removing symptoms, but requires analysis and elimination of underlying causes of failure. In this training, participants develop skills to perform those steps effectively.

Learning objectives

  • Be able to properly distinguish between assumptions and facts
  • Formulate problems and causes concisely and clearly
  • Determining the entire cause-effect chain
  • Determining effective measures to resolve failures and prevent them permanently
  • Visualise and communicate the complete analysis

During the training course, participants will receive answers to the following questions:

  • How do I arrive at a clear failure report?
  • What questions should be asked to gather the most relevant information of a failure?
  • How can I best capture the information visually so that everyone understands it?
  • How do I avoid making assumptions and premature conclusions too quickly? How do I get to the real causes?
  • How do I determine the right actions to complete the analysis and improvement measures to eliminate and prevent the failure?
  • How can I easily present the analysis of a failure and possibly transfer it to a colleague if it has not yet been completed?

Programme

The training is very practical in its approach. The theory taught is alternated with a lot of practice on malfunctions and problems recognisable from one's own practice. The participant experiences how what is learned can be directly applied in daily work. Topics covered

  • Basic principles of failure analysis such as visualising information and asking the right questions
  • Determining and visualising the cause-effect chain (5 Why / Event Mapping)
  • Determining and implementing appropriate measures

Over de lesgever

Bart Smit is a trainer and facilitator of training on problems, failures and how to prevent them. He studied Operational Engineering and Technical Business Administration in Amsterdam and worked as a reliability engineer at Tata Steel, among other things, before joining CoThink. By training and securing (rational) methods in daily practice, he helps organisations improve their performance. He has already worked extensively with Belgian companies.

Who is it for?

This short training is eminently suitable for technicians who want to learn to look beyond the immediate solution of a failure, and any employee in maintenance and/or production who wants to make an active contribution to preventing the return of failures.
