Beyond Screening: How Better CUI Data Leads to Better RBI Decisions
Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) remains one of the more difficult degradation mechanisms to manage. Because corrosion develops out of sight, inspection programmes often have to make decisions based on assumptions, historical information and measurements from only a limited number of locations. But how representative is that information for the actual condition of an entire piping circuit?
For asset integrity and inspection teams, both extremes have consequences. Inspecting too much can 
result in unnecessary insulation removal, access requirements, cost and workload. Inspecting too little increases uncertainty and can leave significant degradation undetected. Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) helps determine where inspection resources should be focused, but the quality of those decisions depends heavily on the quality and representativeness of the underlying inspection data.
